Can krita replace photoshop ? free alternative

Today I am again sharing an article about alternative software, namely whether Krita can replace Adobe Photoshop properly ?.

And keep in mind that previously this review is based on the results of analysis and personal experience using the software in question.

I have previously recommended GIMP or the GNU Image Manipulator as an alternative to Adobe Photoshop.

But these last few days I decided to give Krita a try and use it as a photo or image editor. And I am quite impressed with this that something unexpected can be done by a software with a free open source license.

And here I will share my experience using Krita.

What is Krita ?

Krita is a free open source software used by professionals to draw, paint and manipulate images. Basically krita is more aimed at drawing activities with a pen tab or mouse by artists.

Krita is designed to be multiplatform so that it can be used by everyone from Linux, Windows, macOS, Android to IOS users. But for the mobile version of the smartphone only applies to tabs or ipad.

As drawing software, Krita is basically more accurate to say as an alternative to autodesk sketchbook, Corel painter or procreate. However, in terms of features it can also be said to be the best free open source alternative to Adobe Photoshop. Because besides having the ability to draw, Krita also has pretty good photo manipulation tools.

History of Krita

The name krita has multi-cultural references. In Swedish, krita means "crayon" and rita means "to draw, and in other contexts of ancient Indian krita means" perfect ".

Krita was originally developed around 1998. Krita itself underwent several name changes starting from KImageShop, Krayon and Krita which have remained until now.

Between 2004-2009 krita was developed as general software to manipulate images like Adobe Photoshop and GIMP. However, since around 2009 Project Krita began to change direction with the aim of becoming a drawing software like Corel Painter and SAI. And maybe because of this we also have the ability to manipulate images and draw.

And the Krita Foundation was finally built around 2013 to further develop Krita. Then the Krita foundation collaborated with Intel to make Krita Sketch a marketing campaign and Krita Studio with GmbH as a commercial version for film and studio VFX support purposes.

Krita Feature

Krita has a myriad of features for drawing and image manipulation. And I will mention only some general features, because if all of them will be too many and I have not learned: v.

And here are some of the features of krita.
  • Clean UI
  • All tools you need
    • Beautiful Brush
    • Brush stabilizers
    • vector & text
    • Brush engine
    • wrap-around mode
    • Resource manager
  • Drawing Assistants
  • Layer Management
  •  Select & Transform
  • Full Color Management
  • OpenGL Enchanced
  • PSD Support (File from dobe photoshop)
  • HDR Painting
  • Phyton Scripting
  • Training Resource
  • Other
nd many more features of krita that I didn't explain all of them one by one.

And one of the features I like is the support for files in the PSD format, which comes from Adobe Photoshop, which makes it easier for users to find Creative Common Resources for editing purposes, most of which have PSD format.

Krita itself has its own default format "* .kra" to store all editing information from krita.

Krita User Interface

In appearance, Krita's interface has a simple appearance but is quite powerful and pleasing to the eye. At first glance it will be so similar to Adobe Photoshop when compared to GIMP.

Krita itself has a theme system that we can configure ourselves.

If you see above Krita has a tools icon bar on the left side and also a layer option, Tools option, Brush on the right.

Can Krita replace Photoshop ?

The answer depends on each skill. Krita by default for me personally is powerful enough to replace Adobe Photoshop tasks with my skill benchmarks.

I did several experiments from image manipulation, Selection and transforming of objects, Color Balancing, Blending, Masking and others.

What's more, krita has a built-in brush which is very beautiful because basically the default brush from krita is used for painting purposes.

One of my obstacles in Krita is that the selection tools are not as complete as Photoshop. I actually haven't used Adobe Photoshop for a long time, so please correct it because I don't really keep up with current features.

And here are the results of my work using krita as image manipulation software. And I will illustrate it

(Example) I make a design for a food product and stamp it to mockup

Conclusion

Krita has so far lived up to my expectations in an image manipulator. Although there are some drawbacks, of course, such as the selection technique which is not as complex as Photoshop.

But for other things I think it's quite good and I would recommend using Krita instead of Gimp. However, everyone returns to their respective skills because Gimp is also quite powerful as a free open source software.
